i bought a gtx 670 yesterday for a second pc, and ran some games on it.

almost everything runs at 60fps, but games like far cry 3 and the witcher 2 drop from 60 to 20-25 fps from time to time.
i installed msi afterburner, and GPU usage drops down from 70-80% to 20-30%, and then back to 70-80% every 30 seconds. CPU usage also goes from 0% to 100% and back to 0% constantly.

i've checked temperatures, and these are the max temps under load:
GPU: 55°C
CPU: 54°C
motherboard: 65°C

these are the rest of my components:
AMD fx-8320
asrock 970 extreme4
gigabyte gtx 670
corsair cx600
corsair h60
5x 120mm fan, 2 in front, 2 in the back, one on top of the case

could it be AUX temperature? i have no idea what it is, but i used HWMonitor and it seems to go as high as 110°C, simultaneously with the fps drops.

Solution
HWMonitor doesn't read many AMD CPU temps right. I think it reads Tjunc instead of Tcase. If your mboard came with monitoring software, I'd use that instead. Thos reported CPU and GPU temps aren't high, but that's REALLY toasty for your mboard. Have you overclocked your CPU at all, or messed with the voltage? The mboard and VRMs shouldn't be getting that hot.

This being said, FC3 is actually very demanding on a CPU and GPU at the same time, and the graphic complexity of the game shifts depending on level. Not only that, but some games just don't like AMD's CPU architecture. First things first: check that the games are fully updated, then check for the newest chipset and AMD drivers for your whole system. When you install them...

i looked at the temps again using speedfan, same result
so ireplaced the thermal paste on the northbridge and the temps went to around 30-40°C.
even though i don't think thermal paste can have that much of an impact, i'm gonna have to assume that fixed it.

thanks for the help :)

If that solved it, chances are the heatsink had become badly seated. One thermal paste to another may only result in 1°-2° difference, but an improperly seated sink, or bad pasting job, can definitely result in those kind of temps. It's just rare to see that on the chipset heatsink. Glad you were able to find and solve it.
