My graphics card slowly updates the screen even when no programs are running.

Hello, I have a problem with a old pc that I want to get running again. The PC is a Compaq Presario S5140WM equipped with a AMD Athlon XP 2600+ processor, 768MB of DDR RAM, a Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 256MB graphics card and a 250W power supply. I know this PC is really old but I want to get it working again for some old programs. As I booted it up for the first time is a couple years it first gave me a "CMOS check" error and proceeded to boot Windows XP Home Edition. That's great and all but then I started moving windows around and they slowly updated on the screen. On Firefox and Internet Explorer the same thing with the graphics card slowly updating the screen happens there too. I tried moving the graphics card over to a different computer and the same thing happened. Maybe my power supply is bad? Graphics card over heating (when the fan first starts spinning it sounds like a car starting)? Maybe the CPU is done?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Compaq Presario S5140WM Specs (again) - AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 2.13GHz 256KB of L2 cache, 768MB of DDR SDRAM, Original motherboard (don't know the model number), Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 with latest drivers for XP, 1 80GB Samsung Hard drive and 1 120GB Western Digital Hard Drive, 2 CD-RW/DVD ROM drives, 1 floppy disk drive. 1 rear exhaust fan.

Compaq Presario 6000 (Other computer) - AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 2.13GHz 256KB of L2 cache, 512MB of DDR SDRAM, original motherboard, ProSavage S3 Graphics (integrated), 1 40GB WD HDD, 1 CD-RW drive, 1 floppy disk drive, 200W power supply.

I already reinstalled Widows XP, and tried Windows 7 on there with all up-to-date drivers. The max amount of RAM is 1GB which I took from my other Dell Dimension and that still doesn't make a difference. Anything else?

Try a newer or new hard drive. Aside from that, the system is just to old to run many things smoothly, that depends on what you want to run on it though, it should run some basic things OK, but loading newer pages with animations and high res video will be painful.

If it's not a clean setup of Windows, don't use the existing setup, install it clean. Very often systems are slow just from use and things getting installed, uninstalled, registry entries being orphaned, drivers being loaded that don't need to be anymore, etc... It's called "Windows Rot", slow down of a computer just from day to day use.

Ok I pulled a year 2000 Western Digital drive (still uses the noisy bearings so performance isn't as good)nd did clean install of Windows XP Pro on it. Also I believe it's the GeForce FX 5500 because I put that card in another machine and it did the same thing. With this one the CPU is maxed at a Overclocked Athlon XP 3200+ 2.6GHz with 512KB L2 cache. 1GB of DDR PC-3200 RAM and a "new" hard drive. With on board graphics it performs as it should but with the GeForce it acts slowly. Maybe I need new thermal paste or fan for it?
