I know what I would personally want in a laptop and that I couldn't get it for less than a few hundred but my GF and her sister want to get their dad a new laptop for Xmas. I've sold computers in the past and obviously built my own but laptops are different in their own right.

Use:
Spreadsheets
Light Browsing
Email

Requested:
Screen larger than 13"
Decent battery life
i3 minimum
SSD would be nice (or able to upgrade)
NO TOUCHSCREEN
Preferably under $400 as I may have to buy office for it still

My main concern is getting something that wouldn't seem very responsive. I've worked on a few dated laptops that would drive me up a wall if I had to use them as my daily work station. This Amazon link is something I have in mind and wanted an opinion as I think this is my starting point http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Laptop-Intel-Memory-80L000ALUS/dp/B013NQB6CI/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1446152471&sr=1-3&keywords=laptop&refinements=p_n_feature_eighteen_browse-bin%3A6819965011%2Cp_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A7817222011%2Cp_72%3A1248879011 Thank in advance for the help, I realize now how far behind I've gotten with laptops.

You could always do a Chromebook. They are around that screen size, have about 9-11 hours battery life, will NOT have i3 power (will run around 2 ghz), DOES have SSD, no touch screen, and will be more in the $200-300 range. I see that office/web browsing is the primary purpose, you may be able to save $100 by running web based programs like Google Sheets/Docs rather than buying office. My fiance bought a Chromebook about a month ago and we are very pleased with it based on our uses for it.

I had thought about something like open office even, but I can't dictate what software he will be using. What would be the differences between a chrome book and a standard laptop? I remember netbooks (shudders in horror) and I'm certain that wouldn't work for him.

EDIT: Looking at them a little more, they are just tablets dressed up as laptops huh.

Chromebooks use VERY small hard drives. My fiances for example: 32GB (which is one of the larger). It's definitely not something you want to store a bunch of files/programs on. With that being said... They all have USB ports which you could run a portable HD or even a flash drive to store files on. A lap top is going to be larger (more powerful overall), but have less battery life and much larger HDs. Most laptops also run tradtional HDs rather than SSDs. Especially in the under $400 range. Personally, I can easily get by using the google web based programs rather than office suite.

I think the issue we'd end up with is trying to teach an old dog new tricks. That's not to say he couldn't learn, rather I would have to go out there and help him with any issues and having never used Microsoft Office Online, I can't say I could offer much support right away either. Sadly I think i'll need to stick to a laptop for now and if needed swap an SSD in myself.
