Hi,

I'm trying to decide between a Western Digital 2TB Black or a Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD.

I know this has been asked before but I can't seem to find a clear answer as there seems to be many different views on it. It seems clear that the black is the way to go for reliability but apart from that they seem the same.

At the moment the black is roughly £100 whereas the barracuda is roughly £50. Do you think that the reliability is really worth double the price?

(Also considering a 3TB barracuda £70)

Thanks.

It depends on how important the data you are saving on it is.

If you will be using the drive for work, or will have irreplaceable media (like wedding pictures etc.) on the drive then I would highly recommend the WD Black. £50 is nothing compared to losing truly important media and data.

If you're just putting games and common documents on the drive go with the Barracuda.

WD black is a performance drive, and you will pay more for it.
If the drive is just for storage, there are cheaper 2gb drives available.
You might find this article on the WD "rainbow" interesting.

Conclusion:
WD green is good for storage, WD red is all around good.

Here are some hard drive reliability statistics:

If speed is not of your utmost concern, look into the Toshiba 2TB/3TB drives. They're priced great, quick, quiet, and are rebranded Hitachi drives, so they're also quite reliable.

I have a hard time recommending Seagate drives after my experience with several of them.

I haven't seen any perceptible real word performance difference between the Barracuda drives and the WD black. Any brand/model of hard drive can fail. Backup your data regularly regardless of what brand your choose. WD Blue and Seagate Barracuda are my go-to drives for basic builds and I just choose whatever is cheaper at the time.

Good point I've had great luck with WD warranty returns. WD Blue has 3yr warranty.

indeed. people in general had TONS of issues with Seagate's 7200.11 drives, but i had two 1.5TB versions that were perfect for years upon years. about a year ago, i took one apart because it was beginning to glitch and SMART was saying it was due to replacement, but the other is still working fine.

WD works well too. after 5++ years, it's not a big deal to replace a drive of either brand. by then, capacities have gone up to the point of being able to buy ONE new drive and move over FIVE old drives worth of data.
