GSync is not meant for 144Hz monitors.

It's meant to reduce the investment in GPU's and allow for 40FPS to be as fluid as 60. It matches the sync rate of the monitor with the framerate of the graphics card. That eliminates tearing, which results from the monitor's refresh rate being 60Hz and that of the card being between 40 and 60.

FreeSync is AMD's implementation of GSync(GSync came first).

Adaptive sync, on the other hand, switches between 30 and 60 FPS, based on actual framerate. It's 30 if actual FPS is between 30 and 60 and 60 if FPS is greater than 60.

Free Sync is the name of AMD's implementation of Adaptive Sync. Adaptive Sync is part of the DisplayPort standard. G-Sync is proprietary (but similar), except the "G-Sync" that Nvidia markets for laptops which is based on Adaptive Sync. I know that's confusing, but that's how it is.

So what does that mean?
If I buy a display that has AMD Free Sync incorporated, it (Free Sync) won't work with a Nvidia that has Adaptive Sync, and vice versa?



 


Correct, Freesync only works with AMD cards and Gsync only works with Nvidia cards. Truth be told though, if you buy a 144hz monitor, you will rarely run into screen tearing anyway unless you run 980s in SLI or some expensive setup like that. I just recently upgraded to 144hz and everything is silky smooth and running above 60fps with no tearing at all.
