I can buy a GTX 980 now, but I'm tired of my tech instantly becoming redundant (like my r9 270x, 300 series was released 5 months after). So will the new GPUs be worth it and when will they be released. How much of a performance boost will they be for the extra wait and price?

A new series of cards will always be right around the corner, nothing you can do about that. That next series will always be better power for almost the same price as well. My best advice to you is this, if your current card is still doing fine for you now, then wait til the next series comes out. If your current card is driving you nuts because it can't keep up, then get a 980. No point in not enjoying new games because you aren't happy with the framerate.
