Was it okay to install the PSU ahead of time?

My new case case and PSU came ahead of the other parts I've ordered for my first PC build so I decided to save some time by installing the PSU into the case ahead of time. To test my PSU, I plugged it in and switched it on. It didn't spin up or do anything at all. Did I do something wrong or do I need a motherboard for it to power on, and was it alright to install my PSU a few days ahead of time?

It's perfectly fine to install a PSU in an otherwise empty case. Your fan didn't spin because there was no instructions for it to power on from a motherboard. You don't have your case's power switch interfacing with your PSU yet.
When a PSU is switched on, but the computer's circuit is open, it's essentially in a standby mode, waiting to be told to deliver power and rev its fan.
