I can buy a GTX 980 now, but I'm tired of my tech instantly becoming redundant (like my r9 270x, 300 series was released 5 months after). So will the new GPUs be worth it and when will they be released. How much of a performance boost will they be for the extra wait and price?

P.S
Its in here because no answer in gpu section

Solution

We do know about AMD's Fiji cause it has been out for months as Fury X, Fury, and Nano.. You might be thinking of AMD's upcoming Greenland, Baffin, and Ellesmere??
To OP:
Any hardware you buy will always be outdated within a year.. That...
There's no answer in the GPU section because there is no answer to your question because nobody knows how much better Pascal for Nvidia or Fiji for AMD will be because they haven't been released yet. So to answer your question, if you need a GPU upgrade NOW, buy one. If not and you can wait for 6-9 months, then wait.

And here's a hot news flash: no matter what, or when, you buy PC hardware, it will be "outdated" within in a year by the next version. If that bothers you, you'll never be happy!

To OP:
Any hardware you buy will always be outdated within a year.. That is just how it works.. So if you can wait for new hardware and get it right when it comes out go for it, if not get what you can now and use it now.. Your current card has GCN so it isn't outdated bad at all..

No need to be dick. As far as I'm concerned, I'm not that experienced. I've not had to upgrade before as I got my hardware at the start of the year. So yeah it is a 'news flash' to me.

My sincere apologies if I came across that way. Not my intentions at all. I was more directing any apparently micro-aggression at the GPU developers constantly coming out with the "next best thing" after plunking down hundreds of dollars on a GPU. Yeah...I'm still b-hurt over spending $500+ on a GTX 680 that got owned by a $400 GTX 770 of the same core design not even six months later. I did much better skipping and waiting for the 970 though. Again, apologies if my comments came across as a personal attack.

Don't worry I feel you. Just going to wait for the new gpus. Annoying how much you have to pay for it to instantly be pointless. Guess it's a sacrifice you have to make :)

I wasn't trying to be a dick either.. Computers are kinda like cars, the second you drive them off the lot it is worth 20% less than you just paid.. Computer hardware is quite similar, there is always something better just around the corner and that is how the hardware companies make money by getting you to keep upgrading to try and keep up.. You can usually findout what hardware is in development by looking at the company's roadmap. Also you can find out stuff on rumor sites like fudzilla, wccftech, semiaccurate, theinquirer, theregister, semiwiki, and many others but be ready for flame wars and complete BS rumors..

Yeah, some people say q1 for Pascal, some say q4, I'm gonna take the chance.
