I dropped my external drive like an idiot. Seagate Expansion USB 3.0 5TB Desktop External Hard Drive (STBV5000100). Now im looking to sending it to a data recovery but i dont know if thats a good idea now that i read this: Under SECURITY, CONFIDENTIALITY AND NON-DISCLOSURE and LAWFUL OWNERSHIP & INDEMNIFICATION.

http://

The Problem is that i have a ton of pornographic material on that drive that was pretty much a dump drive i use to keep my old and new PC clean. And said material may or may not break some copy right laws. But among that there is also a bunch of family video and photos that id like back.

So my questions are:whats the risk really amount to? Has anyone had an experience with them? Whats the pricing like on this or any other company? The photos are would be nice to have back to look back on but not at that risk.

The hard drive Im pretty sure is has a broken hand because it will boot and make a series of clicks before winding down. Its not detected by 2 computers. I haven't tried putting it directly to my PC but i doubt that would work since it sound broken. Any ideas on how it could get the data back would also be appreciated.

Is this what you afraid of?

The stuff on there breaks copy right laws if they can break confidentiality at any time then yes. There's no child pornography no or anything that involves terrorist activity. There is some Japanese stuff though i believe. This drive has stuff from many years so....

Would software be able to read a physically broken drive? i would think so but i know very little about them.

Whoa.Based on this and some other prices Ive seen probably will just scrap the thing. Its not looking like anything under a couple hundred dollars all the way to the thousands witch is way too much for not anything that is priceless.Plus the mild embarrassment of strangers looking through my old porn stash add in the risk of another DMCA scare. NOPE. Thanks anyway.

Data recovery companies will not report copy-written material as they are under no legal obligation to do so. They are under a legal obligation to report only child pornography/terrorist threats. In terms of whether they will look through your data, there is no guarantee. In terms of the cost to expect for a drive that has been dropped and is clicking, costs from reliable companies range from $1-2k on average.

Software tools are useless of course.
