New PC build - nothing on screen

I'm completely new to building PCs. I've never done this before and I don't know anything about any of these pieces of hardware. I did some research and my brother helped me out when I picked the parts for my PC, and I ordered them in the mail. I got them all and I've been using a combination of Youtube tutorials and the manuals that came with the parts to put the PC together. I thought I had everything plugged into the right spot, but when I turned it on, the fans started running, but nothing showed up on the screen. The GPU's light went on, but its fans are not spinning. There's a small green light lit on my motherboard. I tried unplugging everything and plugging it back in, but to no avail. I'm connected to a monitor with a VGA connector plugged directly into the port on the back of the motherboard. What could I be doing wrong? How should I troubleshoot this? Keep in mind that anything could be the problem, no matter how simple, because I'm very new to this. Thanks for the help!

My parts:

AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor

Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard

Crucial Ballistix Sport XT 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory

Hitachi Deskstar 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Asus GeForce GTX 960 4GB Video Card

DIYPC Adventurer-I8-G ATX Mid Tower Case

EVGA 500W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply

If this was with the gtx 960 in should you have used the outputs from that. You did plug the pcie power connector into the gpu?

You could first install the os,than put the gtx 960 back in again and after that install the drivers for that.It should work with the gtx 960 in too,but you need to have output on the monitor.
Make sure that before you install the gpu drivers for the 960 you install the motherboard drivers first.Start with the chipset drivers, after that the rest.Get the latest drivers form the site of the motherboards maker.

Well, I'm building the PC at home right now, and I'm just using a crappy old monitor that my dad had lying around. So I had to use the VGA connector into the motherboard, that's all I had. The graphics card doesn't have a VGA port. When I get back to school, my TV there has an HDMI cable. So I should be able to just plug my graphics card back in, and plug it into my TV with the HDMI cable (plugged directly into the GPU) and I should be good to go, right?

Oh yeah... I forgot the adapter came with it haha, I set it aside when I opened the GPU and just left it there. Oops. Alright, I'll try that out, thanks. I already packed my computer up to take it to school though, so I'll just test the HDMI cord from the GPU to the TV when I get there. Thanks for all the help guys!
