Current GPU = Radeon HD 7870 reference
*1 ghz core and 2gig mem

New monitor = $200 25in LG 2560x1080 LED IPS

I want to upgrade my gpu now but I don't know what to get...depending on the sales...not sure. I want to make a big enough upgrade to make it worth while.

The 390x and the 980 are going to be my high limit and they look good.

What about the other R9 300 series and the other 900 series...?

Solution
The 970 is considers ideal for FHD, your running a slightly higher resolution than FHD. The 960 is significantly weaker than the 970. Go for either the 970 or 390

I can take care of the PSU and anything else later, but for now I want to know what card inside the R9 300 and 900 series I should get. I believe the computer im upgrading the gpu in has 2 hard drives, an i5 3570k, 1 7870 gpu, 2 120mm fans, 3 240mm fans, z75 mobo, and a 550W psu.

The 980ti looks dope but I'd like to make a "smart buy" and grab something price / performance. What about a normal 980? Or 970? amd's 390?

After looking at the price differences between the 390x and the 390, I feel i should just get a 390 for what I would assume be the similiar if not same performance.

With Nvidia I'm not sure on the different 900 series cards. Right now I see 4gig 960's on sale @ newegg for 200 or less. I could drop 500 and get a 980 if it's justified after being compared to the other 900 series cards and amd's 390/390x.

Almost forgot thanks for the help and input.
