So i have decided to buy Computer and cannot decide if i should get a gtx970 or a r9 390x.I live in India and both will cost me 30k INR which is around 450$ US.
I am more over a nvidia person as ive heard its better in the high range and AMD isnt the most optimized during Game due to game developers not caring about AMD.
the r9 390x has 8gb VRAM while the gtx 970 has 3.5gb VRAM while the nvidia card is slightly more clocked than the AMD

Solution
Between the GTX970 and R9 390x the 390x is the superior card. You have to keep in mind that the GTX970 is compared to the R9 390 and the 390 is still slightly faster and has 8GB Ram. So this means that the R9 390x is even faster and 8GB of ram. As for as what you've heard about developers not caring about AMD you have been provided terrible information and I would advise you not to take advice from that person again. The only issue with AMD is that they can be at times slow with driver releases however that doesn't mean Nvidia cards always have proper driver support either.

The GPU choice should go in this order 1st 390x 8GB Ram, 2nd 390 8GB Ram and 3rd 970 3.5GB +0.5GB Ram.
Both cards are in the same performance tier in tom's hierarchy guide.
It takes a synthetic benchmark for a specific game to differentiate.
You probably can't tell the difference in actual gameplay.

One plus for the GTX970 is that it will need 75w less power to run, and will generate less heat.

VRAM has become a marketing issue.
My understanding is that vram is more of a performance issue than a functional issue.
A game needs to have most of the data in vram that it uses most of the time.
Somewhat like real ram.
If a game needs something not in vram, it needs to get it across the pcie boundary
hopefully from real ram and hopefully not from a hard drive.
It is not informative to know to what level the available vram is filled.
Possibly much of what is there is not needed.
What is not known is the rate of vram exchange.
Vram is managed by the Graphics card driver, so there may be differences in effectiveness between amd and nvidia cards.
Here is an older performance test comparing 2gb with 4gb vram.

Spoiler... not a significant difference.

Thanks i still have decided i am gonna go for the Nvidia for now. I will be asking my PC Builder on which one he recommends as i live in India and the 390 and 390x are harder to get for the same price.

Update-I managed to fight a Seller who is sells the R9 390x for the same price as the Gtx 970!
