Hi Guys,

I have recently purchased a SSD and I want it to only be my boot drive for windows 10, and maybe some large games such as The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4.

I have a 1TB HDD (Used 590GB) currently in my system, which I want to keep in my system for mass storage.

How do I clone ONLY the Operating System and not any of my game files etc... to the SSD?

Hi poundej,

I'm afraid there is no way to clone ONLY the OS from a drive while ignoring the other data. I've detailed the two most common ways of making the transfer below.

Two common paths for installing a new SSD are:

1) If you have a Windows Installer Disk and your Windows Key you can install a fresh operating system on your SSD. From there, you can have both drives plugged in, and as long as you boot from your SSD you will still have access to all the data still living on the older drive. (This isn't ideal, as your old OS is still taking up room on the HDD, but if you don't have an external drive it is your best option)

2) Move all of your data (execpt the actual operating system) to an external backup drive, then once you...
Hi poundej,

I'm afraid there is no way to clone ONLY the OS from a drive while ignoring the other data. I've detailed the two most common ways of making the transfer below.

(This isn't ideal, as your old OS is still taking up room on the HDD, but if you don't have an external drive it is your best option)

2) Move all of your data (execpt the actual operating system) to an external backup drive, then once you had no more than 100GB left on the HDD clone it to the newly installed SSD. From here you can re-format your old HDD drive and transfer the data from the backup onto the clean HDD drive.

If you want to go with the cloning option here is a tutorial that should help: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/faq/id-2839729/clone-drive.html

I highly recommend using Macrium Reflect for your cloning software, the download for it is at the bottom of the tutorial I've linked, as well as the step-by-step of how to use it.
