I recently bought an i7 3770 and a 1155 motherboard used on craigslist. I saw that the motherboard was missing a pin and one was bent, but i put my i7 3770 in it just to test and plugged it in with everything. Only thing is I didn't put on a heatsink/fan as I dont have one for 1155, the system started but didnt boot to bios and I kept on restarting the pc to try to see if it would work. I touched the i7 and it wasn't too hot but warm and I researched that using it without a heatsink damages the cpu, am I screwed? PS: longest I kept it on was probably 1 minute, but probably did that 5 times.

Solution
The CPU is what runs the BIOS' POST code, so you do need a CPU to POST.

What I said was that running the CPU without a heatsink shouldn't fry the CPU under normal circumstances.

I also said I would be more worried about the bent or missing pins than the lack of heatsink.

I would be more worried about the bent and missing pins than running the CPU without heatsink since you should still be able to see the motherboard/CPU POST without it. The CPU has built-in thermal protections that will prevent it from frying itself when running at stock settings. Those protections were originally implemented in part to protect CPUs against heatsinks getting knocked loose when shipping assembled systems.

Wait so the motherboard should post without a cpu? And so you don't think the cpu is fried?

He said that it will POST without a heat sink; a CPU and memory are absolutely required.
