Motherboard required to test out optical drive and PSU?

Hi all,

I'm building a PC incrementally and decided to start out by purchasing the case, power supply unit and optical drive first. I placed the optical drive (OEM) in the case and attached the sata power supply unit that came with the PSU to the drive and also connected the psu to some other cables that i saw hanging in the case that lead to the case's fans.

When I turn on the power supply unit however, nothing happens. Is this normal? Will I have to wait until I get the motherboard in order to test everything out?

My parts are as follows:
Case: Deep Cool Kendomen
Optical drive: Cheap samsung dvd rw OEM
PSU: EVGA 750W Gold rated (I researched heavily for this one, but the sata power cables that the PSU came with are not too my liking. It was very difficult attaching the power cable to the optical drive, and even now it feels a little flimsy).

Anyways, yea, I was just a little concerned and need some reassurance from some of the experts out there. Unsurprisingly of course, this is my first build.

Solution
The power supply has to be plugged into the motherboard to normally work. There are ways around this such as the paper clip method. On the main ATX power plug use a paperclip or small section of wire to jump the green wire to a black wire.. This will then allow the power supply to power on. However if you are not sure of what I am talking about google it or just wait for your motherboard..

Cool thanks. I was a bit surprised when I flipped the on button on the power supply and nothing of note occurred. I am getting the motherboard tomorrow, so hopefully things will work out better when I have everything ready.
