I just took a maxtor fireball 3 40gb ide harddrive out of an old tvio. I would like to know what's the best jumper position to put itbin. This drive will be used for storage. The primary master is an 8gb hardrive with win 98 and the secondary master is a cd-rom.Should I connect the harddrive as a primary slave or secondary slave or set it as secondary master and put cdrom as secondary slave?

Solution
I would suggest also making it the Secondary IDE Master device. But that does mean that you will have to change the jumper setting on the CD-ROM drive to make it a Slave device on that port.

You may also need to change the ribbon cable connection. The cable ideally will have 80 wires in it, but only 40 holes (well, 39 really with one hole blocked off) in the connectors. It will have 3 connectors. The BLUE one on one end goes to the mobo IDE port. The BLACK one on the other end should ideally go to the Master device (that Maxtor HDD). The GREY one in the middle should go to the Slave device (the CD-ROM unit).
