Can you earn weapon skins or just buy them. Also, is it just competitive that you start out with a pistol and not a custom loadout or is the whole game like that?

You can get weapon skins or cases as "drops" in games, but they are usually quite cheap skins. In the main game mode, you start out with a pistol but you can buy other weapons during the game. You start out with all the weapons unlocked, and you are able to play with them if you gain enough money in game from kills, objectives, rounds won etc.

you have to get crates then buy keys to get skins, and in competitive you need to get kills with a pistol to buy other guns, but in other parts of the game just hit "B" when you spawn to choose a gun
