Hello everyone, I've recently bought a new motherboard and am concerned about activating my OEM Windows Vista. I'm aware OEM versions don't act nicely with different motherboards however I'm wondering if there are ways around it. First, I also own an Windows 7 upgrade which does not appear to have OEM in the activation code which from what I gather would work fine with a new motherboard. So I'm wondering if I can either install Vista, then install the upgrade without activating Vista first (perhaps while disabling internet connection and then activating Windows 7 later), or install the upgrade after entering my OEM Vista code. The third option which I don't really want to go with but am curious about is I had to download Vista via torrent since it is no longer available anywhere else and the torrent included a crack. Could I use the cracked version and then upgrade to Windows 7 and activate after upgrade? Thanks!

Solution
You will get the message that it cannot be activated. However there is a link in the activation window that lets you do a manual activation by calling Microsoft and giving them your installation ID. They will then give you a number to enter into the activation window.

Solution
Hello... 1) A phone call MAYBE required to re-active your Legal Vista version with the NEW MB... painless procedure.
2) You do not need to install Vista first... to use a Windows Upgrade Disk. In the past all you had to do was insert the qualifying OS Disk, in the drive when Asked... Just install the Upgrade and try to activate/call as needed.
3) Don't do this... not needed if you have other Windows install Media in hand.
