I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card but I'm limited to an external power supply that comes with the x51. Since my power supply cannot be upgraded without modification, I'm looking for a card that can run with the power that I have. I'm not sure if my card is oem or ti or just regular and I'm not sure where to find out what my current power supply is. I'm afraid getting a 970 or something similar would require power that my system doesn't have. I have a fairly large budget but I would prefer to just spend money on the best card that can run without modification to the rest of my system's hardware.

max is gtx 960 for the older version of the x51 with the 330w power brick

the newer revision r2 or higher i believe, can run stock non OC'ed reference gtx 970's

but you risk black screens and other temp/power related issues

So I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to computers. Are you asking for my dxdiag for my full specs? Also what range in terms of numbers should I be looking for for my ampere like 100-200 or what?

We don't need the complete dxdiag, just what CPU, RAM and motherboard (if possible) the PC has. The reason being is that it's important to balance all the components to avoid creating a bottleneck.

As for the power supply, there will be numerous ratings (+3.3V, +5V, -12V, +12V, etc.) with an associated wattage and ampere. All the major components draw power from +12V, so we need the wattage or ampere rating of that to calculate how much power your PC has to use.

Take a look at the picture below if you still aren't sure.

LL

You can see that this power supply has 50A and 600W on a single +12V rail. Some power supplies may have multiple +12V rails with different amps and wattages.
