Need help on deciding build. Skylake build vs Haswell build.

Hello,

I am planning on building a new and first desktop PC and having hard time deciding which route I should go.

My general task with this new PC would be a programming using IDEs with MANY programs opened at the same time. Some gaming will be happening as well, however, I am not getting graphics card initially for the sake of getting better CPU. Will add one later time.

My budget is around 1000 CAD.

These are my plan for each build.

- SKYLAKE BUILD

CPU: Either I7-6700K or I7-6700
- I am not sure which one I should get. I am not planning to do any kind of overclocking for now, but base and turbo boosted clock speed is quiet different between these two CPUs. The price difference is roughly about 80 dollars.

CPU COOLER: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
- For the budget, this is probably safest choice. I am planning to upgrade the build to liquid cooling in later date.

MOTHERBOARD: Asus Z170-A

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400
- I was going to get Crucial Ballisitx Sport DDR4-2400 but Vengeance is about 15 dollars cheaper. So why not?

CASE: NZXT H440

POWER SUPPLY: Corsair CX 600W 80+ Bronze
- Not the best, but still gives me future upgradability such as adding graphics card. 20 dollars MIR was too sweet.

- HASWELL BUILD

CPU: I7-4790K
- About 50 dollars cheaper than 6700K.

CPU COOLER: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte GA-Z97MX
- I am open to suggestion. Just choose this based on the review and price. Since I am going for the ATX case, it doesn't have to be MATX like this board.

RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600

CASE: NZXT H440

POWER SUPPLY: Corsair CX 600W 80+ Bronze

If I follow these build, Haswell build is about 100 dollars cheaper which gives me option to throw liquid cooler right off the bat.

My question is:

Which build makes more sense if I am looking to use this PC for at least 4+ years? ( Future Proofing..?)
Or any improvements that I can make to these builds?
Thanks for the help in advance. Any input would be appreciated! :)

Thanks for the reply.

Would you be able to give me a recommendation?

Thanks :)

OK, Here's a Haswell system.

Fastest CPU and can be overclocked.
I'd like a better cooler. If you spend about $80, it may be all you need.
You need to overclock for maximum performance, and to extend the life of your system, if not now, then eventually, so you need a good motherboard with decent power phases and VRMs.
The faster memory does not cost much more but will give you 5% to 15% more performance.
Much better PSU.

At $140, you are spending 14% on your case. That's far too much for me. I'd look at the Cooler Master N400 for half the price, but cases are a personal choice and I understand why you might want the case you have selected.

I can't get a Skylake I'd want to recommend for your needs under your $1000 budget, or especially close.

Well for programing I would throw in there the i7-5820K as well. with 6 cores and 15mb cache it is a no brainer pick for multi tasking / editing over the 6700k.

For gaming I would definately pick the 6700k (I recently upped from my i5-750). I see absolutely no point in going the devils canyon route atm on a fresh build over skylake, mainly because the price of the 4790k is one and the same with the 6700k on most retailers. The price difference is negligable imho on the mobo and the ddr4. Long story short unless you got a decent haswell board lying around grab the skylake gear.

Yes, I looked at the i7 5820K, but it would not fit in the budget. Same with Skylake, and Canadian prices. It's over $100 more expensive.

Thanks a lot for your detailed input.

I really appreciate it.

I will fix the parts list accordingly :)

If you don't mind, could you be able to still give me recommendations for Skylake build?
Unless the price goes way beyond my budget, I could wait little more and save up more. (Prob in 100-200 range)

Thanks a lot again!

Needs decent motherboard, and fast memory. The Skylake will not need liquid cooling. Air will work fin.

That looks gorgeous.

Thanks a lot for your input :)

Will let you know when I get to build one of these machine.

If you can stretch the budget, there is this alternative.

Overclockable, six cores, twelve threads, but needs a discrete GPU.

6 core 12 thread sounds sweet but I wouldn't be able to stretch my budget right at the moment. :p

Thanks a lot!

Hi again,

After some research, apparently that D14 is superior over C14.

Is there any reason you recommended C14 instead of D14?
