Looking for a cheap laptop for 12 year old daughter preferably small no larger than 14 inch under £300 and not a chromebook.

Remember it's for a 12 yr old girl. Crazy colors are a plus ;)

I'd agree with the pick of the ASUS with the i3 CPU and a larger screen, will be a lot better to keep for a while, if treated properly will be fast enough to last through high-school or later.

The price point is a bit awkward, you will either get a decent CPU in a large case, or a small case with a slow CPU (for long battery life and...

The HP stream is a nice choice:

Pity the colours are so bold.

The Acer Aspire ES1 is also decent:

The model with 4GB RAM is better if you are going to keep multiple browser tabs open:

Keep in mind though, at this price point you are looking at a laptop that can handle basic word editing and browsing tasks, and not much else. Even keeping more than 3-4 browser tabs open will cause the laptops with 2GB RAM to slow down.

EDIT: I know you said 14 inch is the largest you can go, but this is a VERY decent laptop for the price:

EDIT 2: Even a decent MacBook would be better than those laptops in my opinion (Except the last one.). A bit old, but you get the wow factor of a Mac :). Will handle basic tasks the best, IMO. Just make sure to check that any software she uses is compatible.

The price point is a bit awkward, you will either get a decent CPU in a large case, or a small case with a slow CPU (for long battery life and cheapness). If you want to find a faster CPU in small screen/case, then the price shoots up.

You may want to take a look at some used business models like Lenovo X220 or HP EliteBook, they would come in about a 12.1-12.5" size and are very sturdy. I gave my daughter a Lenovo X201 and she likes it a lot even though it's just plain black. Stuck some stickers on it, and instant girl laptop that has a $1,000 build in a $200 price used laptop.
