Ive got some sketch designs id like to print as a laptop chassis.

I'd ideally like to purchase everything but the chassis and then fit with standard innards, however it appears there isnt standard format for laptops.

Would anybody be able to advise of the best way to purchase these bits.s, mobo, cpu, screen etc.

I was budgeting spending three- five hundred pounds. Essential I want all the components but the case.

Here's what I'd do:

First decide on the laptop model that you will use for the final build. Then, go and buy a broken laptop of the same model, and test it out on that. A parts only laptop will cost around 40-50 pounds, much cheaper than an actual working computer. The internal components won't matter, but make sure it has a HDD and RAM (Even in a nonworking condition.) so you can test fit every component of it. You should try...

Unfortunately, the best you can do is buy a replacement motherboard + CPU cooler for an existing laptop, and then the rest of the components. Depending on the motherboard, the CPU and RAM may or may not come soldered on. Then you will have to find a replacement screen for the laptop model that the motherboard was originally intended for. Finally, you'll have find a web cam, Bluetooth, trackpad and wireless module if you want them, plus a battery and AC adapter, all meant for the that exact laptop model. Finally, you'll have to modify your current design for the case to adapt it to the specific motherboard model you choose, since each laptop motherboard model will vary in dimensions, as there really is no standard.

An easier method would be to buy a laptop in your price range, gut it and 3D print a case around those parts. This is also why you see very little custom laptops being built, since they require a lot of time and effort for something that you ultimately cannot upgrade much, if at all.

This is a very interesting build though: Click here.

It uses desktop components to build a laptop that while not really meant to be used on the lap, is portable enough to be taken around. It doesn't have a battery though, which it's only minor flaw. Still, I don't think it was exactly built for use on batteries, since would run out or batter power in an hour or two at most.

A bit more ambitious than what I was attempting. A lot of fun though.

The simplest was to appear to give it a trial would be to buy a cheap laptop in a plastic shell. Pull the shell off and then put a new one on with the same internal dimensions. I was thinking of maybe an HP11 for this. Seem sensible?

You should try as hard as possible to test it out on the same laptop model because while it may work on one model, it may not on another, due to a variety of reasons but mostly due to the fact that laptop designs are not standard.

You can also identify any potential problems this way, and can test out ways of fitting the case to the final product, instead of redesigning it to fit the finished laptop. And afterwards, you'll have a laptop that you can use for spare parts for the working laptop you buy, so you can save on future repairs!
