First, I hope I am posting in the right spot. I've been to this forum before through search engine results when troubleshooting and solving issues but I've never actually posted here. If this is in the wrong place, my apologies.

So here we go:

I'm an avid online gamer. Playing games like World of Warcraft, Destiny, League of Legends, Call of Duty and many others. For the past few months I've been dealing with connection issues in all of them. I currently use Verizon as my ISP and use their High Speed DSL internet. I have spoke to Verizon support on at least three occasions and so far the problem has not been resolved. The reason I'm posting here is so that I can better understand what the issue is exactly and hopefully work towards resolving it. I'm pretty computer savvy but I don't know everything.

This issue started around June/July. Before that I didn't have any issues and was pretty happy with my service. Then all of a sudden while gaming in World of Warcraft I was having terrible latency issues causing the game to be unplayable at times as well as causing frequent disconnects. I took the necessary steps to troubleshoot issues on my end and came to the conclusion that the issue was not on my end. I ran some tests, which I'll include here below, and was told by members of the World of Warcraft forums that my issues were due to packet loss and this was an issue with my ISP. I then contacted Verizon Support and was told my issue was my router, which I was 99% sure it wasn't, but I thought I'd take the shot with a new router and we'd see.... at least if it wasn't the issue I'd now have an updated router, at the least.

The new router arrived and the issues persisted. I contacted support again and was told everything on the network was fine and there was no issues from the tests they ran. All the while still experiencing issues while gaming. I started playing other games and still had terrible latency and frequent disconnects from the game servers. The issue wasn't something that happened every once in awhile it was something that was pretty frequent, in fact it was more common for me to have the issue than not.

Below are tests have ran:

Note: I edited down the "No response from host" as it goes on for quite a few hops at the end. I know that's not an issue and just a fail safe from the server to weed out bots.

Thank you to anyone who helps. I appreciate it. I guess my questions are these:

1) What exactly is the issue here?
2) Why does there always seem to be a timeout or issue on hop 4? (just curious)
3) Can it be fixed or should I switch my ISP? (I've seen others with similar issues or the same issue I think and they can't get Verizon to fix it or Verizon says it's not their problem.
4) If it can be fixed what do I need to say to Verizon Support to get this issue fixed? I've talked to them 3 times now with no resolution.

That issue with hop 4 is from Verizon out to the world, so that pretty much shows that the issue is on their side. What you can try to do is bypass the router and just connect to the DSL modem and test that way.

You did some pretty good tests, showing them what you posted here would help, the issue is that while you may see what the issue is, unless it's happening to a lot of people in your area, the time spend to troubleshoot it and find a reason may not be worth their time which is why they are just running a few tests and saying things are fine.

If you can get a connection other than DSL (cable or fiber), you should switch. DSL is a bit on the waning side of broadband connections now.

Thanks. I appreciate your reply. I was positive the issue wasn't on my end but I wanted to make sure. I think I will be switching to cable relatively soon. For a few dollars more in my area I can get a faster cable connection than what I'm getting now from Verizon DSL.

Sometimes downstream routers just don't reply to ICMP so you will never get traceroute to work properly even when you should be getting clear results... but yeah sounds like it's on their end, sucks that they haven't found a problem.
