my brother is currently in the process of building a desktop for the first time. hes very limited in terms of budget and I'm trying to help him keep things rolling. we have an old laptop that was ruined in a house fire a few years back and the OEM key is still on the back. could I take that oem key to activate a legit copy of windows 7 (so he can upgrade to 10 for free still). another question id have is how would I go about actually getting windows 7 on the computer without illegally downloading it before hand and installing then using the key code, or how should I go about it? thank you for the help.
