i plan on buying a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 G1 Gaming 4GB GDDR5 PCiE Video Graphics Card GV-N970G1 GAMING-4GD.

My PC is supplied with 600W of power and this video card requires 550 W.

is this enough ?

ah ok thankyou very much. what would happen if i attempted to run the 970 on my current power supply? also, could you recommend an alternative graphics card that is similar to the 970 in power yet would be more reliable running on my current PSU?

Most likely it would either not power the card, or be put under so much stress that the PSU would fail and possibly damage other components in the process.

There really isn't a less power hungry card with the same performance on the market. I personally wouldn't recommend running anything more than a GTX 950 on that PSU, but that is a significant performance drop from the GTX 970.
