I'm trying my hand a PC gaming for the first time and kind of learning as I go.. I have purchased and assembled the following:

I7 - 2600
4GB ram
AMD Radeon R7 250
Windows 7 32-bit
PS4 Controller
kinivo btd-400

I have the PS4 Controller paired with my BT. Currently working on game installation. When I start installing the game, I get to the point where it wants to download 7.5 GB of Steam client and whatever else that comes with it. If I had my choice, I'd prefer not to download it. There appears to be a way around the download, with directions given by Steam. They don't make sense to me though:

Using Steam launch options to install retail games from disc

Log in to Steam and click on Library.
Right-click on the game, select Delete local content, and confirm.
Insert the first disc into your computer.
Close Steam (Steam > Exit).
Press Windows Key + R to open Run
In the Run window type:

"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -install E:

Replace E: with the CD/DVD drive you are installing from if is not correct.
Replace C:\Program Files\Steam if your Steam installation is not in the default location.
Press OK. Steam will launch and ask you to sign in if you do not have your password saved. Your installation should continue from the disc.

First I don't have a steam account, does this mean I have to create one? I tried creating one, but then noticed I don't even have a 'Library' tab or button to click on. Next, it talks about clicking on the game in Steam,... well I'm not using Steam to download the game so why would there be a game in there to click on? I'll start with these questions. Thanks in advance!

Ok, followed the direction of RJMadCat and migronesien. Thanks for your help. I case others that are new to steam and PC gaming I'll post what I did:

1) Created account in Steam web site

2) Click the install steam button on top of the page. Follow directions for the install.

3) Log into the steam Client with the account credentials you created on the web site.

4) You then have access to your libary, choose add game on the bottom left.

5) From there you can add your product key on your CD. It recognizes your game and you can use steam's directions from there

Insert the first disc into your computer.
Close Steam (Steam > Exit).
Press Windows Key + R to open Run
In the Run window type:

"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe"...

Hello GLE,

What game are you trying to install? Most games come with DRM (Digital rights management). This means that you must use things like Steam to play that version of the game.
I do not own a console, but I think it would be equivalent to the Playstore on a playstation. Some games when you buy them off the shelf will tell you that is requires Steam, or requires Uplay, or Origin and so forth.
It is a pain and many people complain about it.

Steam itself is not so bad, I really like steam and have over 300 games on it. once you have an account and a game linked to your account you can throw away the DVD and have the game in your libary forever, you can also share games with friends/family.

Just to add a bit more, When a game is released it might be 10GB in size, but 2 years later there has been patches and updates and the DVD is out of date, so you might have to download patches for the game.
Some DVD games do not even have the actual game on the disk, but instead a steam installation file and a cd key.

Download the Steam client to your PC, then log into it, once your in you can add the games CD key to your account

Just get used to Steam. Believe me Steam is BY FAR the best platform for games, controller compatible (Big Picture Mode) and you really don't want to miss these sexy Steam sales. :)

And yes, create an Account, install Steam, log in in Steam (on your PC not on the website) and then you have your Library with all your activated games there. (might need to activate them there first if not bought directly on Steam, you can activate them in the bottom left corner.)

Steam is great other than it's customer support. Absolutely atrocious.
Just register an account, log in and from there you can buy games directly through them and once installed, you're ready to play :)

I may just bite the bullet and download steam if I can't get around this. I don't see my self becoming a PC gamer, just taking a sample of what else is out there until I get another Sony console... Alan Wake is exclusive, so I figured this was the only way I would be able to play it without buying 2 consoles.

The benefits of pc over console is quite large in my opinion, I don't think steam should be the thing that makes you not want to play games on PC. If you live in a country where internet is a problem I can see maybe why this is a problem for you. If not then this is a positive thing and not a negative thing.

What bothers me about steam is the potential for a monopoly... with monopolies its always the customers that gets screwed.

Also if you get ripped off on steam, if you charge back your money, your whole account gets banned.

So basically they can hold all your PC games hostage so you cant defend yourself against ripoffs.

Personally, I only use steam to buy stuff I REALLY know I will like. Stuff I have played already. Never preorder or anything like that.

Okay, how exactly do you get ripped off on steam?
They offer full refunds on games you purchase that you do not want.
Of course they will ban your account if you take your money back without a legitimate reason or everyone will just buy 100 games take the money back and they cannot ban your account for it?

Steam is not the one to blame if a game is bad or buggy, that is the developer. The developer needs to contact steam and put their game up for sale.
Same way Amazon cannot be held responsible if you buy a couch from their website and suddenly it is not comfortable for you.

Note: I did not have to 'Delete local content' because there was none created as I am new to steam. There is an button to click on in the menu to do this but it was greyed out.

Thanks again for your help....
