Main PC specs:
i5 4690k
GTX 970
XFX Pro 750W
MSI Z97-G43
8GB DDR3 1600Mhz

So I'm really interested in getting a 4K Monitor, but realize my GPU at the moment is not up for the task of getting anything reasonable out of the framerate.

I am however wanting to prep my rig for the future...

I am thinking of just upgrading to a single 980ti and giving it a go but my Mobo isn't capable of SLI (Only Crossfire) so if I do purchase a 980ti now I will be stuck with it. But with that said, I am wondering if maybe AMD are planning any card better than the 980ti is that possible?

Is it smarter to wait and see what gets released?

Solution
Both Nvidia and AMD are going to be releasing much more powerful graphics cards next year. If you can wait just a little longer you might find a better solution than the 980ti for 4k gaming.

You also would need a bigger PSU to run GTX 980ti's in SLI, but might not need a new PSU with one of the new single card GPU's coming out next year. So really, it would probably be more cost effective just to wait before trying to jump into 4K.

Solution
Yup 980 Ti is the only single card I would consider for 4k. SLI not needed unless you want max details at 4k. 1 980 TI can run almost all games max details at 5760x1080 that I have seen so far this is a little less than 4k though pixel wise. I agree next gen should be aimed at 4k so if you are not in a bind to upgrade I would wait it out till middle of next year ... You will be happy you did. If not 980Ti now maybe another next year :p

Guess I'll wait and see what Nvidia and AMD deliver next year, I guess I'll have to deal with running games on Ultra @ 1080P @ 144Hz for another year, oh well :) Hopefully we all get treated to reasonably priced cards and monitors in the future.
