I recently overclocked my CPU to 4.5GHz and I have some questions about stress testing on Prim95

I recently overclocked my i7 5930k (3.5GHz default) to 4.5GHz and I have 32GBs DDR4 2800HZ G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 RAM and I have a Corsair H100i GTX liquid cooler. Everything seems to be running fine so far my settings are:
CPU strap @ 125MHz
BLCK @ 127.3
CPU core voltage @ 1.3
CPU cache voltage @ 1.25
CPU ratio @ 35
CPU cache ratio @ 28 (min and max)
Disabled C-States
Disabled Hyper Threading
Disabled IEST (Intel Enhanced SpeedStep)

Since the overclock my friend has been telling me to stress test this OC with Prime95 for 12 hours to see if I had a stable overclock (no crashes or freezes within 12 hours). I would, but before this OC I had a OC at 4.4GHz and it was stable but I when I stress tested that OC overnight for 12 hours all my CPU temps were 85+ some were even at 99, my friend told me to reapply my thermal paste which I did and I saw a pretty good and fair improvement, but I'm afraid that could've caused damages and ever since I don't want to run prime95, also considering I overclocked an extra .1ghz. My friend said if temps go to 90 Prime95 declocks your CPU's clock so the temps go down to prevent damage, is that true? Also my temps currently on my CPU stay around 40-50 on idled. Guys what should I do? Should I stress test it? Or not?
 
DO NOT use prime95 unless it's the most recent version, older versions are NOT compatible with haswell.

I wouldn't recommend prime95 anyways, because it puts so much load on every single part of the chip that no program in the entire world will do that to a CPU. Use Asus's ROG realbench for a proper stress tester.

5930k thermal throttles at 105c. its tested to run to that temp safely before throttling its own performance down to lower temps to protect itself, so you are safe.

also, remember that really no normal use scenarios are going to push the heat that prime95 does saturating it to 100% use. so it will never hit your prime95 maxes during normal use.

i notice you dont mention your cooler here, a 240 rad aio water cooler might also help manage those temps.

Anyways, if using prime95, version 26.6 is safe. What i suggest, and the way I validate my OC's for CPUs would be, run intel burn test at maximum setting for 15 passes. This will quickly let you know how hot the CPU will get. If that passes a few hours(3-5) of prime95 is nice. After that I do a long term test using the x264 stress test(google it). It's FAR more realistic then anything else and that's why it's ideal for a 10+ hour test. After that, a few benchmarks, and some gaming and you should pretty much have a bullet proof OC. As for those temps, at that voltage you really shouldn't be getting into the 90's. 85c is not unexpected though. I'm running an h105 on my 5930k at 4.5ghz with similar voltage. Hottest I saw was during ibt, was 85c, and that was about 4 hours of it. Give all that a go. If it passes you are rock solid. Reason for such heavy testing? I HATE instability. BSOD's drive me crazy and I simply won't have it. I'd rather run at a lower stable clock then have a sketchy OC which makes that OC pretty much useless.
 


Isnt that all versions PAST 26.6 that are bad? Version 26.6 works for for haswell, not the newer ones.

 


Oh really? You could be right, I thought on overclock.net i heard that the older prime95 versions were not good for haswell.
