Recommendations for a RAID enclosure

Hello,

I'm in the market for an external RAID enclosure. Swimming through the endless options and price ranges has gotten me a little overwhelmed. I am looking for a reliable, 5-bay enclosure with USB 3.0 and RAID 5 (4 active drives with a hot spare). I do not need a NAS, and I do not need any fancy features. I was also hoping to spend less than 200, but was looking for something that's good quality.

Does such an animal exist? Am I going to need to pay more? Let me know what your thoughts/recommendations are. This is going to be used for file storage on a home lab/domain/media server for general storage, with the occasional streaming to my TVs (DLNA - already setup/working/handled by the server this RAID box will be plugged into).

Thank you

Hi Diatech,

One of the best choices you can get in that price range is the Mobius 5-Bay for $250.00.

- FireWire 800, eSATA, USB 3.0 interfaces
- RAID 0 (Striping), RAID 1 (Mirroring), RAID 10, RAID 3, RAID 5, JBOD (independent disks) and Combine (Span)
- Trayless design provides a simple way of HDD removal and installation
- Airflow is maximized due to the high quality, quiet fans that exhaust air away from the internal HDDs
- 2 Year Warranty

Thanks glamdringfh,

This looks pretty solid. If there are no other recommendations, then this is what I'll go with.

As far as the company goes though, are they known/reputable? I'm always concerned about companies that I don't know. Not saying that Mobius falls into this category (because frankly I don't know them and have never heard of them before now), but I try to avoid companies with bad customer service like the plague.

Thanks,
Diatech

No problem, and great question.

They are a relatively new company which is why you haven't heard of them. The company has a very good track record, and the 5-bay has sold so well that it currently isn't available on Amazon because they haven't been able to make enough to keep up with the demand. Their 2-bay is still available from Amazon, however.

Here are the reviews from Amazon for the 5-bay, they heavily support the enclosure as a quailty item:

The only thing this seems to be missing (and this is just me being picky) is a self-diagnostic or failure warning indicator. In my case, that doesn't really matter because of the hot spare; I'll just need to take a peek at from time to time to make sure I still have fault tolerance in place :)

Other than that, I'm sold!

(unfortunately, all I have are 5x consumer drives, but I'll just replace 'em with NAS drives as they fail).

Thanks again glamdringfh!
