My computer went to sleep and never woke up again (PC turns on but no display on monitor and no working keyboard/mouse)

Last night I left my computer on and it was working fine...absolutely no issues whatsoever to lead me to believe something would happen overnight. When I went to wake it up today, I moved my mouse and it started up just like it was supposed to...but no display on my monitor. So at this point, the mouse was still working well enough for the PC to register it. I tried reseating all of the monitor cables, tried the onboard graphics instead of my graphics card, and I tried a different monitor--no luck. I thought maybe my computer was just stuck in sleep mode, so after that I tried just shutting it down completely and restarting it...then I noticed that there were no lights on my keyboard anymore. I pressed the spacebar which gave me a brief flicker of light, tried restarting my computer again, and now I'm not even getting a flicker--keyboard and mouse are both completely out of business, just like the monitor.

So far I've only tried reseating the RAM, which didn't make much difference, and I tried draining the power for 30 seconds. I haven't tried taking the battery out yet because it's actually situated a little bit behind my graphics card. Just a note: I don't have a mobo speaker, so there's no beeping and there never has been. Everything else seems to be working just fine--fans are going, LEDs are on, it's just that none of my input/output devices are working. This computer is only about 10 days old, it's freshly built and still under warranty if I need to replace any of the parts, but I would really prefer to exhaust all possibilities before declaring anything dead...especially the motherboard.

Since you talked about a battery - I assume you have a laptop?

If it actually went to sleep, then a complete power off should bring it back. Unplug it from the wall, and remove the battery. After removing the battery, plug it back in and power it up. If it boots, then shut it back down, put the battery back in and you should be good to go.

If it doesnt boot, then something in the hardware has gone bad -- so call the place you got it from and have them fix it.

In either case, call the place you got it from and explain what happened so they can prevent it from happening again.

Oh i see. Well unplug from the wall, pop out the motherboard battery, wait 15mins (yes thats 1/4 of an hour) and then put it back. if it works as I expect your PC will start, and ask for date/time. Or at least you will be able to get to the bios screen and start poking around.

Since you dont have a mobo speaker -- I would get one from somewhere, they are invaluable for troubleshooting stuff like this. Chances are you will need to order it online unless you have a good computer store locally (Best Buy doesnt count)

Once you have a speaker, follow the basic troubleshooting guides found scattered around the forum to see if its a hardware problem, or a windows problem.

**UPDATE** The issue is solved. I removed my RAM from the motherboard and powered my computer on, which sent it into a boot loop. I turned the computer off again, reinstalled my RAM and everything's working fine now. It seems like something happened to either my RAM or the RAM slots on my motherboard while it was in sleep mode.

Hi All,

Thanks for this, helped me majorly.

The way I fixed this was by plugging out the RAM as well as the CMOS battery, I left the CMOS battery out for about 15mins, and the PC booted.

Thank you very much for posting all this, helped me alot.

I am having the same issue with my HP 3500 Pro, after upgrading to Windows 10 Pro from Windows 7 Pro. The issue started after I had changed the display settings to a resolution too high for my monitor. Windows 10 did not ask me if I wanted to keep the setting. The guy from HP in India, I think his name was Joe, could not tell me how to boot into Safe Mode in Windows 10 so I could change the setting. He had me reboot the computer so many times that it corrupted the boot sector of the hard drive. I bought a new hard drive, installed it, loaded Windows 8, because the OS disks that came with my computer were Windows 8, not Windows 7. I upgraded the computer to Windows 10.

Now, any time I shut down my computer, and try to start it, the Mouse, Keyboard, and Monitor are unresponsive. The CD drive opens, I get lights on my NIC, and when I plug a USB drive into the port, the light comes on, telling me the USB port is actually alive.

The only way that I can get it to boot is to, power down the computer, unplug the cord, reset the power supply by pressing the power button again. Next I reset the CMOS by moving the jumper, pulling the battery, and move the jumper back. Next, I pull the Ram, and try to boot. I get the beep codes for no RAM. I shut it back down, replace the RAM, and battery, and try to reboot. This is hit and miss. Sometimes after continuous tries, I can get it to boot. Nothing works every time.

I believe I am having a UEFI issue with Windows 10. My understanding about UEFI is, that it does not read the CMOS to load devices. UEFI boots into sort of a last known good state. I go to the screen to troubleshoot UEFI, but when I try to reboot, it happens again, so I can't troubleshoot. Normally, a Warm boot, or Sleep does not cause the issue. Sometimes by moving the Mouse and Keyboard to another USB port it will work. Nothing works every time. I have been plagued by this issue for over 6 months. I am not sure how to fix it for good. Any help would be appreciated.
