2x 2GB sticks, 2x 1GB sticks (acceptable 6GB combination?)

Hello all,

Couldn't find a thread about this specific mix so wanted to ask. First to know, I've got an older DDR2 motherboard (linked below)

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M4A79_Deluxe/specifications/

I already have 2x 2GB of DDR2 memory installed from a couple purchased as a pair.
CPU-Z ID's them as:
Corsair - Part Number CM2X2048-6400C4DHX
(Module Size 2048MBytes, Max Badwidth PC2-6400 (400MHz)

I've found a second hand store selling 1GB sticks of DDR2 individually listed only with the information "
1 GB PC6400 / DDR2 800Mhz 240 Pin Memory" (only way to buy them) for almost sofa money. While I don't like the random pick and mix idea I can't buy online and it's the only store around with anything like old ram.

Can anyone tell me if I purchase two of these 1GB 800MHz sticks and slot them in with my pair of 2GB 400Mhz if I'll have any problems in getting a total 6GB of system (win 7 x64) or if it looks like the motherboard won't like having such an odd selection. I've read on the forum about motherboards not liking being used as singles or three in a system so I'm wishing 2x2GB and 2x1GB is ok?

Solution
Sure if they will play with your current sticks (no guarantees they will), would set them up (from the CPU starting in slot 1 with 2GB-1GB-2GB-1GB, which puts 3 GB in each channel so all should run in dual channel, if the mobo supports Flex mode (well AMDs version of Flex) and I think the 790 chipset does ;)

If the board states it can take a maximum of 8Gb in total when all four memory slots are filled with 4x2Gb sticks of memory.
I see no problem at all with running 6Gb with 2x2Gb and 2x1Gb memory modules if you get some more DDR2 800Mhz memory.

Just make sure the latency timings are the same for the two 1Gb sticks of memory you intend to buy as the two 2Gb sticks you already have.

You should have no problem at all running 6GB in the configuration you have stated.
