Hello everyone.

My idea is to build a NAS/Plex media server which is fanless and has a low power consumption.

As I would like to install a Linux OS, I was wondering if there's any problem with this Skylake build:
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-H170N-WiFi
Processor: Intel® Core™ i3-6300 Processor

On the Gigabyte website it specifies that there aren't any drivers for Linux OS and only Windows systems are compatible. I guess the MOBO will work under Linux OS, but I was wondering if there could be some functionality that may be lost under a Linux OS.

Thanks in advance!

Hi faramir85,

Check to make sure the version of Linux you get has drivers that can support your hardware, there are usually good community sites and documentation for each Linux flavor to track this info down. If you can't get appropriate drivers, features like your motherboard's built-in wifi won't work.

its a lot better then It use to be matter of fact this copy of Linux detected my wifi card/adaptor right off the bat and did not for the old rs-232 hardware modem [use to be the other way around ] wifi is so poplar these days I'm sure it may have support. I did not have to do nothing it found the hardware [wifi adaptor ] configured it and it was up and running - zip zap pow and was a athros chipset

so it looks to me you maybe fine - I don't know or remember if just booting from the live dvd if you can then see if your wifi will be detected or not ??

this may help some ?

just try a live bootable dvd/pendrive and see where it takes you ??

all you can do is try it and see its not like it cost anything but some time

Well, I'm not worried with the WiFi feature not working (obviously it would be better if it works right out of the box!), but i'm more concerned about the RAID configuration for example.

The problem I'm facing is that this is a very new MOBO and I can't find information related with this model or any user review in terms of compatibility with Linux OS.

I understand about the new just released board

I wish my buddy was here or could answer he only uses Linux and runs raid arrays but I cant see much changing as far as being able to set up a array ??

should be the same as allways ??

I do know it takes some extra work under Linux then windows reguardless but once its up it works fine ?

all you can do is slap it in and go for it and I really don't see much change fro like a z87 board to the 170 ??

get/burn that live dvd iso and boot to it and go from there it will work out or it will not [thtas how I do it ]

post on there forums and see what they answere on it from there guys ??

Hi,

did you try this mobo? I buy one and I can't enable the wifi under linux mint.
If yes, could you enable the wifi? And how?

Thanks for your answer.
