First time building a gaming pc. Any suggestions to make it cheaper, better etc?

Wow, that'll be a complete monster of a build. If you don't plan to get another 970 for sli in the future, you could always get a smaller micro-atx case. Other than that, it looks like you did a great job selecting components.

The power supply is mediocre. The Corsair CX line is mainly intended for office-type builds and light-gaming rigs. If you're spending $1300 on a PC, you shouldn't be using an entry-level PSU - the power supply is the most important part of a PC and the absolute last place you want to save a dime. Tom's keeps a curated power supply tier list. You really want at least a tier 2 PSU for a build like this.

The only way to make it a little less expensive without changing a lot of the parts you've picked is to go to an AMD build. With a good board, RAM and cooling it would save you around $80-100 or so overall.

Honestly, in this price range, I'd spend the $80 extra and stay with the Skylake build. It's a small price difference and the technology is more up to date and gets you on DDR4 memory.

Only thing I would add to the Skylake build is a good cooler. Hyper 212 EVO will only add $30 or so and will be better than the stock cooler.

Just for comparison, so you can see the overall cost difference:

Oh and just noticed, lose the CX series power supply. Spend $30 more on a good PSU. You can get the Rosewill Capstone 80+ Gold 650w at Newegg on sale for $70. You can also probably find a nice Seasonic or XfX 550w unit for a good price as well.

Well, I have a 2 year old Corsair CX 500 with no problems, but nobody else here seems to like them...
My only other comment is the monitor... You are attaching a $315 graphics card to a $140 monitor??
I have a Viewsonic VP2770. Same panel as apple used to use. It is glorious.
