At 1080p the 970 is the better buy, at 1440p the 390 is better, but the 970 OCs to similar speeds, so they are relatively even once OCed, at higher resolutions the 390 is better.

The 390 has a much lower OC potential in comparison to the 970, it tops out much earlier due to its higher TDP and power draw.
The 970 has much more thermal and voltage headroom for OCing. When I mentioned it I meant OCed vs OCed they are even at 1440p.

Regardless of my posts, it should be noted they are both very close in performance. Its not like one is going to be a bad buy.
