I'm trying to connect my Tritton 720+ headset to my pc so i wouldn't have to buy another headset when gaming away from the ps4, but i want to retain the virtual 7.1 surround sound. I know I can just use the usb to power the headset and get stereo sound, but I think i found a way to get the 7.1 to work and I want opinions before I try this out.

My Gigabyte ga-z97-HD3(rev 2.0) motherboard has a sppdif_0 header with only 2 pins. the manual says pin 1 is for the signal, and pin 2 is a ground.

If I buy this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0035J9Z7W?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A2RTF5UMJCQ40R and connect it without the 5v pin, will the tritton receiver box recieve the optical signal from the mobo? The receiver box is powered via usb, and transcodes the signal into 7.1 to the headset and the microphone works through usb.

Would I still recieve sound and be able to chat through the microphone with this set up? Or am I better off buying a sound card to make the 720 compatible with my mobo? Thanks for any help and opinions you guys give me!

toslink is the cable that uses spdif, also known as an optical cable. The only reason I see my theoretical set up not working is because there is no power sent to the spdif bracket. I'm not sure if the ground on the 2 pin connector would allow for the usb connection powering the tritton unit to also power the spdif bracket. Do you know if toslink cables utilize electricity to send power? I think that the 5v pin is really only needed to power the RCA signal on the bracket, which I have no need for really.

SPDIF uses an RCA-style jack, Toslink using an actual glass fiber cable. They are different.

You link to the bracket doesn't work so I don't know what bracket you are talking about.

A $30 Xonar sound card has toslink on it and would work and have power and everything needed

Sorry, here is the link that was supposed to go there: LINK

From the Q&A section

-If your motherboard only has gnd and spdifo can i leave the +5v wire unplugged and use only the coax out port on this card

-No it will not work. You will need other solutions.

I would jsut get a Xonar card and do it right.
