My friend recent purchased a graphics card that requires a molex power source. I had an old male molex plug lying around and gave it to him. The hopes to splice it unto a sata power connector. The video card has three wires in the molex yellow and two blacks. Is it okay if he attaches the yellow from the molex to the yellow on the sata supply along with the two blacks. I think its safe because its only the 12 volt wire(yellow) no 5v or 3.3v. I'm still not sure though

Yes, it's safe if your friend doesn't mind hacking up one of his PSU connectors. Just be damn sure to get the pin-out correct for the wiring or you can kiss the PSU, and probably a few components goodbye.

Yes.

But as clutch pointed out there may not be enough current on a sata chain. If the PSU has a single 12V rail then it's not an issue, but if the PSU has two 12V rails it might be a problem (might, but not necessarily, depends how the rails are split current wise).

what are rails? Are they how many diffrent sets of chains come out of the psu? Like how some have one but most have two? If that is it would the diffrence not exist if only one of the two plugs on the chain is used?

Not necessarily. Rails are how many different circuits or branches the +12V line is divided up into. It might be reflected in the various power daisy chains, it might not. Generally, 2 x rails mean the board gets one and everything else gets the other. It could be split along the aux power chains too. The GPU's PCIe connectors could be on their own rail. It varies by manufacturer.
Single rail PSUs of course, run everything off a common +12V "branch".

You'll notice that the SATA power daisy chain has smaller gauge wire (thinner) than the ones on the Molex daisy chain. Not designed to carry the amount of current. Oh wait, you said you don't have a Molex daisy chain. What kind of computer PSU has no Molex connectors?
