Here is a link to a video I uploaded showing my problem:

https://youtu.be/u_zs9B0QIT8

I am having this same issue with all my older games. Such as Halo, Quake 4, Counter Strike, Battlefield 2, SW Battlefront, and Serious Sam 2. I've tried everything I can think of to correct the issue. I tried all the different video settings with both AA on and off. I've tried all the different comparability settings. I've also tried rolling my graphics driver back to 347.88. Nothing has worked so far, and this is driving me nuts. Please Help.

My specs:
i7 4790K
GTX 960 4GB OC
GIGABYTE Z97X MOBO
8GB DDR3
WINDOWS 10

Those are some crazy artifacts. Perhaps the games are old and render at such a fast FPS that it messes with your video ram. Have you tried enabling VSYNC in the game to prevent excessive FPS?

Typically when artifacts show up its caused by overclocking the GPU or Vram too high, maybe you could try lowering the speed of your GPU/Vram slightly to resolve the issues as well, but I would attempt to enable VSYNC first to resolve the issue.

Best of luck!

Yes I've tried enabling vsync. It made no effect.

I'm some what of a computer noob. How do you lower the GPU Vram?

There are a multitude of programs that can help you modify your GPU and video ram clockspeeds, a very popular (and free) one is called "MSI Afterburner".

It also allows you to monitor performance (including usage, temperature, and clockspeeds) of your video card.

You can modify your GPU and Vram clockspeeds with this program. After getting it installed, I would first attempt to lower the Vram frequency a few steps to see if it resolves your issue, if this doesn't work, reset the Vram frequency to default, and try to reduce the GPU processor frequency. This is to figure out exactly which of the two is causing your issue, so you can attempt to maintain the highest performance from your GPU without artifacts.

If you are able to find out which is causing your issue, attempt to bring the values back toward the default value one step at a time until you experience issues again, then reduce it back a step to have the highest performance, without artifacts.

Hopefully this wasn't confusing, let me know if it helps!

Best of luck!

Your a fricken genius. I had to dial all the settings in MSI down to minimum, and turn back on vsynk. But it's clear as a bell now. Thank you so much!!!!

check it out

Well, you don't want to dial "all" settings down, just Core Clock and Memory Clock settings, if you lower your Core Voltage or Power Limit too low, you could re-introduce artifacts (keep those at default). The artifacts you have in your video are most likely caused by running your Memory Clock too high, or worse case scenario the Memory on your video card starting to deteriorate.

You could also turn your Fan Speed % higher in an attempt to keep your GPU Temperature lower, high temperatures can also introduce artifacts.

If you are having heat issues, perhaps it would be worth the time to look at the physical graphics card, and make sure there is not dust buildup on the fan/heatsink and memory, as this will cause your temperatures to be potentially much higher (more artifacts).

If reducing the Memory Clock doesn't cure the issue (while keeping power/voltage settings at default) it may be time to return the card (as suggested by Ok Go), as it sounds like this could be a factory defect, fortunately the GTX 960 is a fairly recent card, and should still be under (at least) manufacturer warranty.

I tried reset all the settings in MSI, and only adjusted the core and memory. I started at minimum, and worked my way to max. No effect. The artifacts didn't go away this time.

I'm not seeing any signs of over heating. The GPU temp is hovering between 28C and 30C, and never once went above 30C.

If its my card failing, wouldn't I be having this issue with my newer games too? So far I only have this issue with my older games. Elite Dangerous, ARMA 3, BF3, Killing Floor 2, Space Engineers, GTA 5, and Watch dogs all run flawlessly.

Are there any DX9 compatibility issue with the GTX 960? Because I think all the games I'm having trouble with are DX9 and older.

That is what I'm thinking. My rig should be able to run these older games a dozen times over.

I might be wrong but I'm thinking there's a compatibility issue. It could be my card, or it could be win10. I have no clue which, or how to fix it.

But my card could be failing too. However as I said you would think that if it was my card failing. I would be having issue with my new games too. Which I'm not.

I wish I was more computer savy. It doesn't really help that I have no clue what I'm doing :p.

I just noticed something. With vsync ON or OFF my framerate is locked at 60fps. I tried some of the other games I'm having issue's with and they are locked at 60fps too. Could this have something to do with the artifact issue?

all you can do to see is put the card in a computer with xp-vista -7 and see ??

but with all you se with 10?? and like with any old program with any newer windows there the chance of issue ? I got a lot of them older games and some with 7 needs to be tricked to work with it ??

I got 2 games that don't work at all with 7 but worked just fine with xp and vista ?? so there you go

looking at this you got more then he did

and so on

Microsoft go folks fooled and screwed windows programs that don't work with windows

this is why I never overwrite any os and I yey to see why anyone would install 10 in the first place [bad news]

one thing I will add is like back in the vista days the compatibility mode for vista home was not the same as what you got with vista ultimate . home was a short changed package I had things that worked well with ultimate that did not with home ???

also are these games full retail disk or some kind of steam type down loaded ???

I like the comments part from this

Battlefront 2, and Counter strike are from Steam. The rest are good old fashioned cd roms.

well like here at newegg window 10 hype it says its the best windows for gaming ?? so you should not have any issue , right ???

http://promotions.newegg.com/software/15-4707/index.html?icid=333742

you watch them folks like steam will get a patch but guys with full ownership retail dvd copies will get nothing - everything you do will require a 3ed party or cloud based your personal computer will now be a public one

[opinion]

its not like your the only one

DX9 is not optimally supported by Win 10. It is a -known issue- that DX9 and Win 10 are not copascetic at times. If your rig is running it, you are lucky or worked the work arounds to get it to work.

Yea but all these forums your posting refer to games crashing, or not launching. I'm not having any issues with game crashes, or launching. My issue is those annoying lines and flickering black spots you see in the video.

Something is not rendering correctly.

The question is, how to fix it?

unless you test the card in another computer [with out 10] to see if it does the same thing then you can say its the card ?? also theres issues with NVidia drivers and 10 as well you may look in to ?

http://wccftech.com/fix-windows-10-nvidia-driver-conflicts/

with 10 your the guinny pig tester that's why I cant guess why anyone that had a solid stable copy of like 7 and ''upgrade'' to it ???

now if you got a clean copy /fresh install no big deal just go back to 7 or something until 10 is ''fixed'' or how ever you want to call it

its not hard to see what you were getting in to with it witjh all the articles , reviews and forums?

I did a search just here from toms on windows 10 old games and 1080035 results... wow may see if something pops up in one of them ??

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/all.html?refine=windows+10+old++games

funny how 10 only been out a short time and as many results as 7 has in what 7 years ??

best windows for gaming sure looks that way

I tried the window fix for nvidia drivers in your link. Same issue!!!!

I borrowed the monitor from my kids computer and hooked it up to my computer. Same issue!!!

I even went down to Fries Electronics and got my card warrantied. I just got finished installing the new card. Same issue!!!!!!!

I reverted back to window's 8.1,,, same issue!!!!

This is driving me crazy!!!!

Do you have the ability to install a fresh copy of windows 8.1?

If so, I would recommend that, download the newest chipset drivers for your motherboard from the manufactuer website, and download the newest GPU drivers from Nvidia's website.

That is crazy that a different GPU is doing the same thing as the old one, have you tried putting the GPU in a different PCIe slot in your motherboard if available?

Have you attempted to "clear cmos" or revert any bios changes to default?

Simply because the newer games work fine, really seems to lead to the conclusion that this is a software problem and not a hardware issue (which at least is good news I guess).

Make sure MSI Afterburner settings are set back to default, as setting them to "MAX" could introduce artifacts on any perfectly good graphics card.

out side of maybe something wrong with the motherboard or its pci-e slot ??? or the psu not putting clean power to the card ???

''I reverted back to window's 8.1,,, same issue!!!!'' if this was a windows 8 to 10 upgrade that you rolled back ?? lots have big issues with that and I think Microsoft did this to insure you cant so easy ? there desperate to got you on 10 at any cost [that's how bad it is ] I would do a fresh clean install to insure 10 was 100% gone

ya. they will have to pry 7 from my cold dead fingers -- Microsoft fooled a lot folks into 10

So I swapped PCIE slots. I flashed the bios to the latest version. Installed a clean version of win8.1. Installed latest gpu drivers. Same issue in every game except Halo.

Now here is where this gets interesting. I broke out my old CRT monitor (yes I still have one haha), and hooked it up. With my old CRT monitor the games are working great. So my rig + LCD display + older games = screwy artifacts.

Can any one explain this to me??? My rig produced these artifacts on 2 separate LCD monitors, But not on the old CRT monitor WTF????

ya I guess a monitor could not be supported under a cards v-bios ?? [seems like a long shot ] I still got crt monitors I have to pull out from time to time they work just fine for what they are

atleast now you got something to go on and look in to on that deal ??

you know I was thinking about some 900 cards have display issue like the part you plug in to with a monitor ???[ long shot ] also I do know like a straight hdmi to hdmi cable can be flakey to where I don't try to use them anymore

for my flatscreens/hdtv's I use the dvi [at card ] to hdmi [monitor] cable ?? so far it works all the time where straight hdmi may not

first , I would look into the cable you use for the monitor you had the issue with ???

example cable

Both LCD monitors had their own VGA cables. I've never had any luck with HDMI cables so I stay away from them.

I just don't understand how an LCD monitor could cause this issue.
