Hi Tom's Hardware,

I've had a mega-failure with system image recovery. After 5 attempts the system image does not seem to be recognized. I've attempted on 2 separate HDDs. The original and a back-up both the same size, 1TB. I've read everywhere and tried most options, but nothing seems to work. I'm afraid I really screwed my system up.

Initially the system image recovery seemed to work, but the bootmgr was missing. Startup repair didn't seem to work. I used CLEAN in DISKPART thru cmd console. Tried System Image again.
Now I'm receiving the error 0x80042402, system image restore not read. The HDDs are now being read as 'Foreign' when I check them with List Disk > DISKPART.

After my latest System Image Recovery which apparently completes after I run it. When I boot back in to do startup repair. The OS is listed as an Unknown, OS Unknown. Thus I am unable to do a System Restore or Startup Repair. I'm stuck in a cycle of just re-writing the system image. Which I know I shouldn't be doing anymore.

How do I get my computer back?
Please help, 700+GB at stake.

Is it possible that the System Image is corrupted? Is that possible?

OS: Win7 Ultimate

Your help is appreciated.
Thanks

Solution
Few things. 1) Make sure not USB storage devices are attached. I know even having Card Readers have caused issues before when restoring an image. 2) What are you're full system specs and 3) you may just have to rebuild the MBR. You can do one of two things. 1) Download and install Macrium Reflect on a working PC. When you start it make the recovery media. Boot from it then under the Restore Menu click on Fix windows boot problems. It should hopefully find your version of windows and you can click on it and just next though everything and restart or you can 2) follow this guide here to rebuild it yourself.

Try one of those and see it can boot

Thanks for replying!
No other usb storage devices are connected.
My specs:
AsRock H97M Pro4
Intel i5-4690k
8GB(2x4GB) Corsair Vengence
1TB Hitachi HDD
1TB WD HDD
2TB Seagate SSHD
250GB Samsung 850 Evo Pro SSD
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
1TB Seagate BUP Slim External Drive

I was told by a friend the same thing about using the clean on the wrong one. But my system image and other files on my backup drive are still present when I check on another computer. If I had used the clean on the wrong drive I wouldn't have my system image any longer. And I made sure when I used clean, that my backup external system image wasn't connected. So I don't think it's that if that helps.

Last night my friend gave me a copy of windows and I attempted to rewrite the image from a clean install and it failed at bootmgr again. 'Bootmgr Missing' But today after running system image recovery the OS is being recognized by the System Recovery Options. I think it's close? I'm going to attempt the basic options, startup repair and/or system restore before going to fix the MBR.

I'll report back later today.

Thanks again for helping.

Thank you for your leads and help. I have my old system image from August up and running. Now I just need to wait for a backlog of windows updates.

How I restored everything:: (may not be in the correct order, but it worked for me)
Make sure HDD is set in SATA 0
Make sure Mobo and HDD are in compatibility mode, IDE
Installed a copy of windows to HDD
Rewrote the System Image from within new Windows Install
Ran System Restore
Ran bootrec /FixMbr
Reran System Restore
System was able to boot and restart to last image/system restore

I wish I knew what I was actually doing. But with a mix of what was available for solutions it worked.

If you're from the future reading this and ran into a similar problem. Take your time and make sure everything is in line first. My near fatal mistake was running through it instead of taking my time. As was suggested, I may have nearly ran diskpart>clean on the wrong one. Take your time. If you've taken proper precautions and backups. You should/will get your system back.

Cheers Toms Hardware!
