Hello,

I have to "enhance" an eMachines EL1200 which is between 5 - 10 years old.
It originally had a Windows XP, 1Go RAM, 1.6GHz processor, and other specs I could list here if needed.

A month ago, someone had it taken to a computers strore to give it some more RAM (it has around 2.75 Go right now).

I have been asked to upgrade the OS to Windows 7. It doesn't have the recommended 4 Go RAM, but i still installed a Win 7 (32 bits), and now it does run.. averagely okay. Sometimes slow. Office 365 took an hour to install, for instance.

So anyways should I upgrade the RAM to 4Go, or should I just recommend to get a new PC because the rest of the computer (processor, etc.) is also getting old and not super efficient ?

Thanks !

Specifications for that system state a max of 4GB of RAM can be installed. It appears that what you currently have installed (minus 1.25GB for system resources and VRAM on a 32-bit OS), so you cannot upgrade the RAM any further.

I agree that a new computer would be your best option here.

Edit: I would note that the best processor for that CPU socket is the Athlon-64 X2 6000 and that would provide a modest boost in performance. Those processors can be found fairly cheap on EBay if you're willing to risk it. Since this is an Off-The-Shelf, proprietary system, there's no promise a different processor would even work.

Umm.. yeah you should really get away from old stuff. I really recommend people to upgrade to a new PC from old junk whenever you can even if the new PC is not a top PC. It's still new. For example something cheap like FM2+ mobo, 4GB DDR3, and A6-5400K is going to be alright.

I would say get the hard drive you are using and use it in the new computer. All other stuff needs to go in the trash bin.
You can even buy an old Dell with Athlon x2 4400+ and 4GB DDR2 from ebay for only around $100.

I say, get away from the old stuff, you need to upgrade to new stuff, or at least get something acceptable.
