Some Questions about PC Building(First time builder)

On my monitor it says windows 7 compatible, but I'm wondering can I use windows 8.1 on it?Also, should I get a z97 board or h97 board if I'm not going to overclock? One more question, realistically speaking, is a gtx 950 good enough for a budget gaming pc build or should i squeeze out a couple more $ for a gtx 960

What do you mean your monitor says it is Windows 7 compatbility? Monitors have no relationship to operating systems. They simply display what they are told, be that a Playstation 1 or whatever. We can't decide Z97 or H97 until the other parts (especially the processor) are determined. And considering how cheap the GTX 960 is getting, I think it's worth it.
  2. Your best hope is to read some articles about building PCs, then some more about what hardware to chose. For example there are recommended component lists for different budgets.
I did a fair bit of reading before building my first PC ten years ago
  3. Ok, I see now. I just thought that only windows 7 would work, and I'll read more about the parts and see. Thank you
  4. wait, would the windows compatibility for another computer affect whether or not I'm able to use it, or is it the same situation as the monitor?

Windows 7, 8, and 10 will run on any PC you build.
  6. no matter what parts I have in the build right?
  7. Well, unless you are building with something from like 1995, it'll be fine. There is absolutely nothing to worry about, all these processors have the same architecture, X86, and Windows is made for that architecture, so it works globally across all those different processors and builds.
  8. Oh I get it now, thanks !
