My Computer Specs:
CPU: Intel Core 4130T Dual-Core with Hyper Threading
Processor: 2.9GHz no turbo 3MB
GPU: GTX 860m 2gb GDDR5
Memory: 8gb DDR3L 1600mhz (single channel)
OS: Windows 10 64bit

I use this computer exclusively for gaming so performance is what I'm looking for, so i want to know if its worth it to upgrade from an i3 to something like an i5, would i gain any noticeable performance gains or any at all. I wanted to go for an i7 but im told that my system cant make full use of an i7 and if i did it would be underclocked. So what are the differences between the i5 and the i7, which one is upgrading to if i want more performance?

Solution
i5 is plenty for gaming - an i7 won't bring any significant performance benefit.

Yes, depending on the game and if it can use more than 2-3 threads, you will see performance improvement with something like an i5-4590. Some games may see a very minimal improvment; others that are very CPU-intensive (GTA V, for instance) will see a large improvement when they have 4 real cores available to use.

Well I'm glad there's a possibility to gain performance by upgrading to an i5, although on the subject of CPU intensive games, my main games currently are WoW,GW2, Civ 5, Skyrim, Witcher3 , and soon to be FO4 and currently i dont know how CPU intensive they are but ill be happy if upgrading increases my performance by around 5fps across the board.
