Ok guys i have built my new pc and the only piece missing is the graphic card. And i am between an r9 390(sapphire or asus) and a gtx970( msi or asus). I am going to play games only at 1920x1080 resolution and my psu is 750w coolermaster which i think is enough for both of them. So let me hear your opninions.

I'd go with the r9 390. It's quite a bit faster than the 970 and is much more future proof.

The 390 supports more DX12 features which means more performance in upcoming games. The 390 has much more memory bandwidth, especially when you consider the last half gig of the 970 runs very slowly. This is a pretty big advantage in games with high resolution textures or for going over HD resolution. Also take into account that Free-Sync doesn't require an extra $200 chip in the monitor to work, so if you did want to purchase a monitor with adaptive refresh rate it would be much cheaper than if you had an Nvidia card.

AMD is about to release a new drive foundation as well. They rebuilt their drivers from scratch to be faster and better looking. AMD states users should expect a nice boost in performance.

The only thing the 970 has going for it is power consumption. It's really only of note if you have expensive power where you live.

what model is your cooler master psu? some are good others are pretty bad

you might need to change it if you want the 390, depending on the model

It's coolermaster g750m, it is 80% plus bronze as i can see the 390 maximum at sapphire is around 400w.

R9 390 or gtx 970 ?

The first thing and the main difference is that the 970 is 3.5GB and the 390 is 8GB
although the 3.5 gb is enough for 1080p games for now but on 4k there are about 3-4 games showing signs that they need more than 3.5 Gb ram in those cases the 390 would excel with its 8 gigabytes of ram and maybe on 1080p games start using more ram soon ? in this case390 wins

The second is the power consumption:

So you see the difference ? the 390 uses a 100 more watts then the 970 the 970 is proven more efficient in this cases i would really like to see things use less power so i might choose the 970 for this reason.

Now the performance:

So if power consumption is not your concern there is no reason not to choose the 390, Here get the MSi version its the best one compared to other ones out there :)

Hope i helped and happy gaming

Thanks for the help mate but i have one question about the first graph about the power consumption. When it says entire system consumption it means only the graphic card or the entire pc used for the test?

Your setup looks good, you can run an R9 390.

The 390 is a 275W GPU, so unless it's overclocked it will generally use less than that. So "entire system" means just that, the entire system uses 389W. You may ask why someone would say 700W may not be enough? There are those who believe in getting a PSU double what you need, but mostly people over estimate how much power their system uses.

In any calculator i have used and from my own calculations the maximum power my system requires is 510w and it's the worst case scenario(with extra case fans and one more disk) so i think a 750w coolermaste 80+ bronze should be enough. Thank you for your help

Yes 750W is more than enough. I have an i5 and R9 290X on a 600W PSU. I also have a power usage meter, the highest reading of power input to the PSU (which is more than output as my PSU is 86% efficient, so 14% is wasted) was 490W and this was with as much overclock on the GPU as it can handle.

GTX970 and R9 390 are quite equals with their own pros and cons.
GTX970 is cooler, very power efficient, better OCable, more expensive and has only 3.5GB VRAM.
R9 390 is warmer, not so power efficient, not that good OCable, cheaper and has 8GB VRAM.
Up to 1440p, GTX970 and R9 390 are mostly the same as long as the VRAM usage does not go above 3.5GB.
For 4k, you need something a lot stronger than R9 390 and GTX970.
For DX12, by the time DX12 became mainstream, you are already looking for better and newer GPU.
For a single GTX970, 750W is already quite an overkill.

horrible psu for a gaming rig, cheap components all around

it has bad chinese capacitors...

stick to the 970

or buy a tier 1 or 2 unit, in 650w or better from this list if you still want the 390:

yeah taking shortcuts on probably the most important part of a pc can come back to haunt you

dont take it personally, you most likely would have had a horrible experience with a 390 on that psu

black screens, restarts, etc takes a stout psu to handle them because of the massive power surges

Thank you very much for your help i will try to replace and if i am able i will go for a tier 2 psu because i can't afford a tier 1. If they don't replace it will stick with gtx970. Thanks for the info, i escaped for a lot of trouble.
