Hi,

I'm playing with a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3 motherboard which I have acquired. It has an Intel Q9400 CPU. and 1 x 2GB RAM, and I am using a Ge 6800GT. Most of that is, I think irrelevant to the issue.

I feel I shouldn't even be asking this because it is so basic a problem.

When I connect the PSU and turn on the PSU doesn't come on (fan doesn't spin).

I have connected the 24 pin main connector, and the 8 pin (2 x 4 pin) CPU power connector, the six pin power to the 6800, and the dual-DVI O/P of the 6800 the a monitor via a VGA adapter. The PSU is an Antec VP450 model, which at least turns on when connected to my PSU tester (seems to be good). I connected the connectors by aligning the latches on the connectors with the locking projections on the sockets on the board. I assume they can't go in the wrong way round anyway. Turned on the PSU with the switch, and ...nothing

There is only the socket on the board which fits each connector, right ?.

Have I forgotten something obvious ? How do I troubleshoot this ?

Even some beeps telling me it failed POST would be good right now.

Eureka !

I've forgotten the 'on' pins on the motherboard ! I have a lead with a push-button switch especially for that purpose. When I fit this, hopefully will be solved !

living up to my username I'm afraid.

OK, I connected the Power on pins on the front panel header through a push-on switch (and also a power on LED which is controlled by two pins in the same header block)
With the 24 pin main and the 8 pin (2 x4) ATX 12V connectors plugged in, whe I push the switch the CPU fan starts, the 'phase' LEDs (a block of 5 red/green LEDs) come on, the PSU fan starts, and the power-on LED connected to the front panel comes on. It all looks good...for 5s when the power goes off for ~1s and the equally spontaneously starts up again to remain on (what is causing this).

So I connect my Ge6800GT PCIe dual DVI graphics card up, into to the x16 slot nearest the CPU, including the 6 pin connector to the PSU. As I have only VGA monitor handy I am using a known-working DVI(M) -> VGA(F) adapter with a brand new VGA cable to the monitor. With the turned exactly as before, except now the fan in the graphics card cooler (stock XFX) is spinning, there's apparently no signal to the monitor.

There haven't been any beeps from the motherboard. I don't see an on-board speaker and the manual (the standard one from the gigabyte website) makes no mention of one. So I plug in a (powered) speaker into the rear line-in (green) socket, and power up again. No beeps.

Can anyone suggest anything ? (I've already taken everything apart and reconnected everything [except the speaker] at least once, some parts 2 or multiple times. The m/b is standing on its original cardboard box earthed only through the PSU

Please remember I've no CD player to install drivers from, nor have I a HDD disk with an OS - I'm hoping that it will find Linux on a USB flash drive connected to one of the rear USB ports. Anyway at this time I only want to get to the BIOS screen to check the RAM is present & correct.
