Building Son's Computer

Solution

Hey Tim...cool build, very neat that youre doing all this for your son.

There are a few places to improve things, but overall looks good.

My personal preference would be to get a more robust PSU (in case he wants to update graphics/new build in the future)...and as you noted more cost effective 960 (though I buy EVGA cards myself, this one is a great deal now): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121928&cm_re=gtx_960-_-14-121-928-_-Product

We are also in Arizona! Hes 14 and I want him to do this with me, but I want to get a good idea of our direction so we dont fall off path. His budget is $500. No monitor or OS needed. I am pretty sure I can snag a nice GPU on Black Friday for $170. RAM is purchased for $36. So that leaves about $300. He is set in stone that he wants a massive amount of storage so I just dont think an SSD is gonna fit. ( I only use SSDs now.)

IMO, SSDs are misplaced when referenced in budget builds...that extra 60-100 is MUCH better spent towards improved graphics, or in your case a better PSU.

Cool! Hello fellow Arizonan! :D

$500 ok.

BTW...Another thing to look out for on black friday is a case, their might be the SPEC-03 for sale which will be way better than that case you have...

You say ARK. WOW thats one of the hardest games to run ever. With that GTX 960 you will only get around 20FPS maxed out. The GTX960 will play almost all games 1080p high 60FPS however arc is known as a game that is really hard to run. You will need alot more GPU power to play that. However if you use the GTX960 and turn the settings down it will play it alright.

Your build had a better GPU and plays games better however it's CPU is an i3. The base for gaming is an i5 and that i3 might bottleneck the GPU making it run slower. For $500 your getting somthing that will beat an xbox or PS4 however will not play all games maxed out 1080p
