PC lost power when something else was unplugged from surge protector

Last night, I was on my four-year-old custom-built PC and also charging my phone, which I'd plugged into the same surge protector as my computer (no other equipment is plugged into that one). When I noticed that the phone finished charging, I unplugged it from the surge protector—and the PC promptly lost power. It immediately regained power and rebooted itself normally (that is, giving me the screen to go to Safe Mode), and it seems to have avoided getting fried.

I have never heard of something like this happening before, so now I'm wondering if this reflects a hardware problem with both my PC (perhaps the PSU?) and the surge protector. I have been having intermittent black-screen problems with this PC ever since moving three weeks ago (detailed in another thread).

Does this sound logical, or am I way off base?

A loose wire is inside the power strip. That is a potential human safety issue. It (and the power loss) does nothing to harm any properly constructed computer. However another power loss due to that internal defect may destroy unsaved data.

Also make sure the PSU is plugged in securely to the power strip, as well as the power strip into the outlet. Unplugging the phone charger could have jostled a loose connection enough to interrupt the power.
