At the moment, an ethernet cable is plugged from the wall into a router (for wifi) that is pretty old and another cable is plugged from that router into my desktop. It is only giving me a fraction of what my true internet speed is on my desktop.. http://imgur.com/xN51lZk

I am thinking about buying a desktop switch ( "TP-LINK TL-SF1005D 5-port 10/100Mbps Desktop Switch" ) but I am not too sure how it works... So plugging an ethernet cable from the wall into the desktop switch and then plugging 2 extra cable from the switch - one to the router and one to the desktop, will give me my true internet speed to my desktop?
this is my internet speed by the way, plugging from the wall directing to my desktop.

You have a unusual install. The connection in the wall must connect to another device. Ethernet cable can only go 100 meters so it will never reach to the central office of the ISP.

If that device is a router then you can just plug your switch in like you suggest. In most cases people have a modem in their house and only a single device can connect.

Now in either case you will still not obtain full speed. Your internet connection can go to 150meg or higher from your speed test results. If you use a 10/100 switch you will limit your speed to 100meg. You really need to buy a 10/100/1000 switch they generally only cost a small amount more than a 10/100 switch.

Now if you actually have a modem then you will need a router. If...

Now if you actually have a modem then you will need a router. If you were to buy a router with 1g wan and lan ports you would not have to buy a switch and it should run at the speed you have purchased.

Key here is figuring out what the wall jack is really connected to on the other end so you know if you can just buy a switch or you have to buy a router.
