New medium parts or old high-end parts?

I was planning on going out tomorrow and buying a new motherboard, cpu, and video card. I was going to bone up on the specs of everything tonight, leaning toward a nice Z97 and an i5 cpu. Not sure about the video card. Anyway, today a friend gave me an old computer with a MSI X58 Pro-E and i7-920 cpu. Do you think I should still get something newer to play some of the new games coming out? I'm more a mid-level enthusiast and not much on high-power games. It also has a BFG GS-650 psu. The video card is only 512 MB, so won't keep it anyway.

You generally wont have to worry about bottle-necking. That would start at around a 970 to 980 range, and even then you could probably just overclock with a good cooler to match and you should be fine. As for that price range, I have a GTX 760 that I love. Could probably find one for cheap online. Maybe even spring for a GTX 960. :)

What was given to you are great parts, but as you know, they are a bit older, but not much older. I would say go on and use it, but obviously get a new GPU. If you don't think it's good enough for you, you can always upgrade!! :)

I've seen warnings before about the bottleneck you can get between the gpu and the cpu, but I don't know how to figure that out. What would be a good gpu to use with the i7-920? I'd like to use a Nvidia card, $100-200.
