Can you use two PSUs in one system?

Hello everyone. I have a problem with my system at the moment and I am not entirely sure what is at fault here.
I get this error when I game on my PCIEx16 slot but not the x8 slot.
"AMD driver stopped responding successfully recovered"

I'm pretty convinced that the problem is the motherboard but I read about a similar problem somewhere here on toms that the problem is the PSU. I really want to trouble shoot my PSU, I was wondering if I could just take my old PSU and plug it in to power ONLY the GPU.

Solution
It is theoretically possible but might not always work properly in practice depending on unintentional paths between the two PSUs and how sensitive the GPU might be to unusual power sequencing between PCIe power connectors, motherboard power and PCIe slot signals.

On some GPUs, the VRM is connected to both PCIe slot 12V and PCIe auxiliary 12V. If you power the GPU from two different PSUs, you may end up shorting their 12V rails through the PCIe slot and all sort of weird stuff can potentially happen since regular PSUs are not designed to work that way. Worst case, you blow up the GPU, motherboard, both PSUs and possibly other components.
