Good evening all.
This is my first time on Tom's Hardware!

So I'll start with my specs. I use this PC mainly for playing games.
Mobo: GA-970A-UD3 Am3+
GPU: XFX Double D Dissipation HD 7850 2GB
CPU: Phenom II x4 965 B.E. Deneb 3.4ghz quad.
RAM: 2x4 Ripjaw X series
Power supply: Rosewill Green Series RG530-S12- 530W continuous at 40c, 80 plus bronze cert.
Case: Rosewill ATX Mid-tower case
Reso: Running 1600x900 monitor

I'm looking to do some upgrading. I have $450 on hand. I was told I need to get away from AM3+ if I'm ever wanting to continue upgrading b/c it's a dead socket type, but I'm not sure I could afford a new mobo AND a GPU/CPU combo to fit it. I'm not sure where to go from here since I'm not very tech savvy. I managed to put together this rig back at the end of 2012.

Note: I run AMD because I am a college student and tuition is very expensive. I think I can manage about 200$ per piece. My 7850 just doesn't do it anymore. I'm lucky to get more than 60 FPS in battlefield 4 with everything on low.

Someone also suggested just upgrading to the FX-8370E as the "best" AM3+ cpu available from AMD, and pairing it with a Radeon R9 280x. This sounds okay to me. Would I need a new power supply or case if I upgraded to these newer AMD pieces?

Thanks a lot everyone for any help.

EDIT:
So here are my choices so far: (will edit as required)

1) Upgrade to a 8320 with a r9 280x. Newegg suggests at least an 850W psu to run this, so total around 500$ or more

2) i5-4460, E34 mobo & a GTX 960 4gb
~190 for i5, ~50$ for E34, Asus 960 for 220. = ~460

3) FX-6300 3.5ghz 6 core, GTX 960 4gb & Asus monitor. quoted around 460$

What do yall think?

According to Newegg, I wouldn't need more than the 550W to run option 2 or 3

It is definitely NOT worth buying an intel haswell build . Only skylake is worth upgrading to because haswell is already obsolete .

If you want to improve gaming performance you can do that with the core of your current build .
Your psu would be a limitation for many upgrades . I would use an nvidia graphics card .
The other thing to consider is that your low resolution monitor doesnt need a big powerful graphics card . More likely you need a better monitor !

CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor ($97.88 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 960 4GB Video Card ($206.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Monitor: Asus VX248H 60Hz 24.0"...
With $450 on hand, there is a lot that can be done.

Your best bet is to get an i5-4460 as your CPU which is around $180.

Grab a cheap MSI P33 or E34 motherboard for around $40-50, and you have $220 spend on your graphics card.

I would recommend getting an ASUS Strix GTX 960 4GB as it is pretty cheap is one of the best 960's out there.

Cheers :)

I mean if he has $450, you really gotta get away from AMD and go Intel - will do well in the long run

True, but also since running a 965,m the 8320 is a big jump and leave more money for a better GPU and move over to Intel later on, can go either way. Thinking the jump to 8320 will prob keep most happy for a year or more in conjunction with the better GPU - save for awhile move to Intel and take DRAM, drives, PSU, new GPU etc with you

He could pick up a 280X for about $200.

No , not at all .
AMD's new 14 nm chips are a few months away from retail . Chances are they will be competitive with skylake

Good evening all.

Thanks everyone for all your help so far. I still need some kind of consensus though. Everyone is saying something different. The PSU plays a big part in which option I chose.
