I want to erase my hard drive because my chrome and Firefox no longer work and have some other issues. I try to reboot with the recovery disc and it goes directly to the desktop, then automatically restarts over and over again. I tried to reboot with Dban and I can hear the cd whirring but it just goes directly to the desktop, so I don't have the option to erase the disc.
I can't reboot my mac with the recovery disc or dban

Your Macintosh, just like a PC, won't boot from a CD unless you tell it to:
